Stayin' Awake

It's nearly 3:30am and although I should be sleeping I am wide awake. I sat down to write a paper around 6pm, well I laid on my bed with my computer and attempted to write a paper. I had barely opened Microsoft Word by the time I fell asleep. I woke up 5 hours later and wanted to kick myself for sleeping for so long. Not only did I lose 5 hours of valuable homework time, but I knew there would be no sleeping for me tonight. So I did what any other normal person would do--I had a cup of coffee and once again sat down to write the paper (at my desk this time.) That didn't work either. I kept getting side tracked. Then Jeanette decided she was going to bed so I moved out to the common room. Then the text message barrage began. I had about 5 people texting me at the same time. It was impossible to get anything done. So around 2 I actually began writing the paper. I have to compare and contrast the story of Electra as told by Aeschylus versus Euripides. Then I also have to write a critique of the film we watched in class. The critique was easy, I've already got that part done. Now I'm working on the compare/contrast part, and even though I know how easy this paper is, I can't focus on writing it. Of course, it's not like I'll be going to be anytime soon so I don't have to worry about that.

In more interesting news, I'm going to see Dane Cook this Sunday at Madison Square Gardens with Melissa. I'm SO excited!!! The only thing that stinks is that the stagehand strike is still going on. Melissa knows everyone at Jersey Boys, so she was going to see if we could watch the show from the tech box, but if they're still on strike we obviously can't do that. It's NYC though, I'm sure we'll find plenty to do!
Things are going well in general, I'm definitely ready for Thanksgiving vacation though. I'll probably use the time off to get ahead on my homework and reading and such since I don't have a car or job anymore. I can't wait to go home! I love holidays :-)

I should really finish this paper now. Good night...er, morning...

Broadway Stagehands Go On Strike

Dozens of Broadway theatres are dark today and will be until further notice due to a stagehand strike. Stagehands have been negotiating contracts with producers since July, mostly dealing with pay cuts and job losses. Producers are looking to make a 38% cut in the amount of jobs for each show, along with a 38% cut in wages. Absolutely ridiculous! I one of the statements released by the IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees) the union argues that unlike the producers, the stagehands are not fighting wage and job cuts to maintain a third and fourth house; they are fighting to maintain their home and support their families. The strike is not anticipated to be a long one, it will probably only last the weekend, if that. The producers will most likely compromise so that the theatres do not continue to lose money. Broadway is a billion dollar industry, it can afford to pay its workers. Contrary to what the producers think, these cuts will do nothing to lessen the cost of tickets for patrons, it is simply a way for the producers to make more money off of the shows.
Let's hope this all gets sorted out quickly! Go IATSE, Oneonta is supporting you!

Finally A Good Day

Today started off like every other Wednesday, I hit snooze a few times when my alarm went off at 8am, eventually got up and groggily made my way to my 9am. Nothing special. During my 10am break I went to Jazzman's for my usual coffee and bagel and waited around until my 11:00 and 12:00 classes. After that, I went to the Student Association to drop some stuff off and got lunch with Melissa Jess and Beth. From 2-4 I was supposed to be working in the costume shop, but Marjean had to run errands so I had to find something else to do. So I asked in the scene shop but there was a stagecraft lab going on so there wasn't much for me to do so I went out and sat on the bridge and waited for something interesting to happen. Eventually Scott, our club adviser, found me to tell me that the print shop called to say that we had not paid for programs from a show we did last year. So I huffed and puffed because I knew it was going to be a big hassle and I didn't want to deal with it. I bundled up and braved the snow (yes, snow) and went back to the SA to figure the whole mess out. Now I must say how much I love the secretary at the SA, Bonnie, she's fantastic. Well it took about 5 minutes to get the whole mess figured out, it was paid so we copied the check and sent the paperwork out. I had nothing better to do so I decided to go over the accounts and make sure my binder was organized. I spent the next two hours getting everything straight and perfect, it was fun because Matt, Ken (SA treasurer), Tiffany (Ken's sister, a senator), Bonnie, and I just goofed around and Matt Ken and Tiffany played Clue. It wasn't a bad way to spend the afternoon. Then we had the brilliant idea to make ourselves business cards with the typewriter, so that was another fun adventure. Bonnie was laughing at us the whole time. So now Matt is trying to get me to run for the student senate this year and I think I will. It can't hurt to get the experience and I spend enough time at the SA. It doesn't sound like and exciting day but after the past few weeks, the small things are what make me happy. And I think I want to come home for winter break after all. (Mar, I need a job! lol)

Oh, and here are a few pics from Halloween:
